Basketball Stars Are Coyotes 2025-26 Athletes of the Year
The Compton College Athletics Department celebrated their 2025-26 sports season at its annual Awards Banquet.
The following awards were handed out at the event:
Men's basketball sophomore guard Nathan Ibarra, who helped the Coyotes win the South Coast Conference title as a freshman, was selected as the Male Athlete of the Year. Ibarra averaged 12 points, 2.9 assists and his brilliant 93.2 free throw percentage (69-for-74 shots) was second in the state. The 6-foot-3, an All-SCC South Division First Team selection, came to Compton from South East High.
Men's Athlete of the Year--Nathan Ibarra
Women's basketball freshman guard Marylou Davis earned the Female Athlete of the Year. An All-SCC South First Team performer, the 5-8 Davis led the squad in scoring at 15.8 points per game and also paced the Coyotes in steals (2.2), added 6.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists averages to her well-rounded game. She scored a team season-high 37 points in a win over LA Southwest on Feb. 4. She came to Compton from Eisenhower High and Seattle, Wash.
OTHER COMPTON ATHLETICS AWARDS
Male Academic Athlete of the Year: Diogo Gallegos, baseball
Female Academic Athlete of the Year: Cheyenne Prado, softball
Freshman Of the Year: Allahya Drakes, women's basketball, averaged a state-leading 16.4 rebounds and 11.1 points as the 5-10 post player was All-SCC First Team.
Sophomore of the Year: Venezia Uribe, softball, was the team's starting shortstop, batting .357 overall, and supplying stellar defense by turning 13 double plays and leading the Coyotes in assists with 75. She had the distinction of being named All-SCC both of her seasons at Compton.
Performance of the Year: Gabriel Cancino, baseball. In a win over West LA, the frosh pitcher delivered an 8-inning masterpiece, allowing just four hits, one unearned run and striking out seven.
Staff Excellence Award: Melissa Angel, Athletic Specialist
Team of the Year: Women's Basketball--The Coyotes improved by 10 victories from the previous season (12-13 overall) and placed in a tie for second place in the SCC South Division.
Coaching Staff of the Year: Women's Basketball--First-year Coyotes HC Ollie Brent was honored as SCC South Co-Coach of the Year and his staff is made up of assistant coaches in Riki Harada, Christiana "Tre" Layne, and Dionte "Dee" Chappell
Female Character Award: Amiah Honores, women's basketball, All-SCC Second Team
Male Character Award: Alessandro Martinez, men's soccer, All-SCC First Team, twice named all-conference at Compton.
Most Inspirational Award: Rachel Fraser, women's basketball
Compton College President/CEO Keith Curry spoke to students/staff at the banquet
