The Compton College baseball team chipped away from a 4-1 deficit and downed host LA Harbor, 5-4, in a South Coast Conference game on April 16.
The Coyotes (5-32 overall) got big blows behind solo home runs from centerfielder Corey Guy in the fourth inning, then shortstop David Avitia in the fifth. Rightfielder Amaree Burnett (2-for-5 plus a double) tied it with a RBI single in the seventh.
In the eighth, Compton plated the winning run as Avitia lined a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Guy, who had walked to leadoff the inning.
Phillip Melgoza (2-4 record) hurled seven solid innings, allowing only four hits, two earned runs, two walks and striking out three. After Diogo Gallegos pitched a hold in a scoreless eighth, Jesse Ferreira fired a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.
Harbor would take the 3-game series v. the Coyotes in downing Compton, 10-3, on Saturday (April 18). Jacob Lopez ripped a pinch-hit, RBI triple in the seventh and scored on a wild pitch and Avitia batted 2-for-4 as the few team highlights.
Second baseman Jaidon Carter leads the Coyotes in overall batting with a .337 average in 34 games while Burnett's .327 mark tops Compton hitters in South Coast play.
Compton completes the 2026 season this week as it begins a 3-game set at Rio Hondo College today (Tuesday, April 21) in a 2 p.m. SCC first pitch.
