Compton, Calif. - Sophomore Brian Araux counted a pair of goals in the team's season opening 3-0 shutout of Cuyamaca on Friday afternoon.
The Tartars outshot the Coyotes 17-8, counting four corner kicks. Sophomore goalie Larry Sanchez tallied three saves, all coming in the second half.
Sophomore Ivan Vasquez started the scoring off a free kick from the left side, connecting just inside the far post in the 24th minute. Araux added one goal in the 36th minute, unassisted, to help the Tartars to a 2-0 lead going into the locker room at the half.
Araux widened the gap the 51st minute on rebound on goal off a free kick on the near side by sophomore Ignacio Carrillo.
The Tartars head to Southwestern College next on Tuesday, Aug. 29 for a 4 p.m. start.
