Compton Softball Competing Well In 2025
After a banner 2024 season in which the program made it to the SoCal Regional Playoffs and won 21 games, the Compton College softball team returns three key sophomores and has some talented newcomers in 2025.
Compton returns All-South Coast Conference First Team selection in first baseman Serena Velez along with fellow sophomore infielders in infielder/catcher Audrey Garcia and second baseman Evelyn Martin del Campo.
So far, Compton is at .500 with a 6-6-2 overall record while sitting in fifth place at 4-4 behind four state Top 15 ranked teams in the SCC standings.
Under third-year head coach Victoria Castillo, Compton won three straight between February 25 and March 1 and had a stretch of winning five of six contests.
Some of the highlights so far included an 8-5 victory at East Los Angeles on Feb. 20 when Compton broke a tie with three runs in the top of the seventh, keyed by a 2-RBI single by freshman pitcher/designated player Lauren Kleib. The next day Compton pulled out an 8-7 win in nine innings at LA Harbor on Feb. 21 as frosh outfielder Destiny Munguia knocked in the winning run with a double.
On Feb. 25 at home, Kleib (3-2 record) threw a brilliant 3-hitter to outduel Rio Hondo's Alexia Mayorga in a 2-1 Compton triumph. On Feb. 28, Compton routed Pasadena City, 14-4, in five innings as the team collected 13 hits with Kleib batting 2-for-2 with a double and four RBI, Garica going 3-for-3, and Munguia hitting 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a double, and two RBI.
In a non-conference game on Mar. 1, Compton again went two extra frames and defeated host San Bernardino Valley, 6-5, in nine innings. Garcia drove in the game-winning RBI on a double as she went 4-for-5 with three doubles overall. Frosh pitcher Johanna Vidales (3-4) went the complete-game route, allowing just one earned run, nine hits, no walks and striking out nine for the circle win.
Garcia is hitting a team-best .460, Kleib is at .429 with 10 RBI, first-year shortstop Laila Davila is batting .385 with two triples and 10 RBI while Velez is swinging the metal at .317 with 2 home runs and 10 ribbies.
