Drakes' Rebounding Helping Coyotes Women's Basketball To Improved Play
The Compton College women's basketball team has turned things around this season under new head coach Ollie Brent and one of the reasons is the rebounding of freshman forward Allahya Drakes.
The 5-foot-10 Drakes is currently fifth in the state in rebounds per game with a 15 boards average. She has three times grabbed as many as 20 rebounds, including a high of 27 in a Dec. 8 victory over Southwestern.
Behind her post play, the Coyotes have a 7-8 overall record, five more victories than all of last season.
On Monday, Compton played state #24-ranked Los Angeles Trade-Tech tough in a 60-51 road defeat. Drakes scored eight points and tallied 10 rebounds while Kaniya Madlock had a solid performance by scoring 14 points with six rebounds, five assists and four steals. Off the bench, Marylou Davis scored 12 points and dished out four assists while starter Andrea Hinton posted 11 points.
To start the year 2026, the Coyotes downed host West LA, 70-65, as Davis in a starting role poured in 22 points with 10 rebounds and four steals. Madlock nearly got a double-double in points/assists, finishing with 11 on the scoresheet and nine helpers.
Hinton added 15 points and eight boards while Drakes collected six points, nine rebounds and blocked four shots in reserve. Amiah Honores picked up eight points and made three of the squad's 16 steals. Rachel Fraser tallied five points and six rebounds. Sophomore DeArviana Watts added three points and six boards.
Compton had an impressive stretch in a tour of San Diego colleges Dec. 17-19. At San Diego City College, the Coyotes got past the Knights, 53-48, as Drakes scored 14 points and pulled down 21 rebounds. Hinton added 14 points and Davis five points, eight assists and eight rebounds.
The next night v. Southwestern, Madlock was huge off the bench with 11 points, 14 boards, five steals and four assists in the Coyotes' 62-54 victory. Davis contributed 15 points, 10 boards, five helpers, and made three steals. Hinton (11 points) and Honores (10) joined the double-digit scoring bunch. Drakes grabbed 12 off the boards.
Against then state-ranked #22 San Diego Mesa, Compton pushed the Olympians, led as late as 44-43, but got sent to defeat, 56-51. Drakes led the way for the Coyotes on 15 points and 10 rebounds.
With the pre-conference schedule complete, Compton embarks on the 10-game, South Coast Conference South Division schedule as it will open with a Wednesday, Jan. 21 contest v. El Camino (7 p.m.). That will be the start of a 4-game homestand for the Coyotes.
