Coyotes Women's Hoops Hold Off El Camino For SCC South Opening Win
The Compton College women's basketball team opened South Coast Conference South Division play with a 48-43 victory over visiting El Camino on Wednesday evening.
The Coyotes moved back to .500 overall at 8-8, winning for the fourth time in the past six contests.
Compton trailed 9-7 after one quarter before taking a 23-19 halftime lead. The Coyotes never looked back, jumping ahead by as much as 12 (31-19) in the third quarter.
El Camino cut it to one, 41-40, on a Christiauna Taylor layup with a minute remaining, but Marylou Davis sank seven straight free throws for her team's final points down the stretch to seal it for Compton.
Davis, 9-for-11 at the line overall, finished with a game-high 14 points plus four assists while Allahya Drakes added 10 points and 12 rebounds. Kaniya Madlock contributed 10 points, five rebounds and four helpers. Andrea Hinton collected six points and Rachel Fraser grabbed 10 boards and tallied four points off the Coyotes' bench.
Davis, who is from Seattle, Wash., is the team's leading scorer at 15.2 points per game.
Compton continues a 4-game homestand on Friday when it hosts Cerritos in a 7 p.m. divisional tilt.
