Women's Hoops First Place For Now In SCC South
You have to go all the back to 2003 to find the only time that a Compton College women's basketball team won a South Coast Conference championship.
While it's early in the 2026 SCC South Division race, the Coyotes are currently tied with Long Beach City for first place in the 6-team league with a 2-0 mark after posting a 45-30 win over visiting Cerritos on Friday night.
The Coyotes are above .500 at 9-8 overall and used another big effort from Allahya Drakes, who scored 12 points and grabbed 22 rebounds--the fourth time this season she's pulled down 20 or more off the boards.
Andrea Hinton added 12 points, Amiah Honores seven points and six rebounds, and Kaniya Madlock five points and seven assists.
Compton has produced its two best defensive efforts of the season in its two SCC South victories, limiting El Camino to 43 points on Jan. 21 and then Cerritos to a Coyotes' lowest allowed point total.
The Coyotes led 10-3 after one quarter, 22-14 by halftime and the Falcons stayed close at 32-24 after three periods. In the fourth, Compton capped a 12-0 scoring spurt on a Drakes' put-back that turned into a insurmountable 19-point lead.
Now the Coyotes set their sights on Wednesday's showdown for sole possession of first place in the SCC South in hosting Long Beach (11-9) in a 7 p.m. tip-off.
