Bio

Lewis Nelson is in his fifth season and seventh year directing the Compton College women's basketball program as head coach.

Nelson served as assistant coach at Santa Monica College, then an assistant and a recruiting coordinator at LA Harbor College before arriving at Compton.

He was born and raised in Seattle, Washington, but spent summers growing up visiting family in Southern California as both of his parents are originally from the Compton area.

Lewis is the son of former NBA player "Louie" Nelson, who played for five different teams over a 5-year career from 1973-1978.

Nelson played community college ball at LA Harbor, then earned a scholarship and played three seasons at Cal State Dominguez Hills. A team captain as a senior, he earned a kinesiology degree there.

Over 15 years, Nelson coached at high schools in South Los Angeles, including winning a LA City CIF Division 4 boys basketball title as head coach at Animo South High in 2012.

He later won a Division 5 championship and was LA City Coach of the Year at Middle College High in 2015.
